The dimensions or even the complete cross-section of profiles
made of metal, plastics or rubber must be continuously measured
and monitored in the manufacturing process. Normally, samples are
measured on a profile projector or similar apparatus and the results
are registered. This method is involved and does not yield a continuous
quality control. Furthermore it can be inaccurate because there
are many steps in the procedure where an exact and careful handling
is necessary. The optical in-line measuring technology using standard
laser diameter gauges or CCD cameras cannot measure indented or
concave parts of the profiles such as connecting rails, grooves
etc.
The PROFILEMASTER® system represents the economical and practical
solution to the problem. A laser/camera measuring head measures
the cross-section of the moving profile in-line and continuously.
Several lasers (typically 4) project a visible laser contour around
the profile and this is then registered by a similar number of
CCD cameras. A powerful PC based processor adds the partial pictures
of the cameras made up of straight lines and radii together to
yield the momentary cross-section of the profile. All relevant
dimensions such as width, height, angle and radii are added together
to form the full cross-sectional picture. The nominal values for
the profile can be directly imported from the CAD construction
which allows easy and problem free programming. Changes in speed
and twist within normal limits have no affect on the measurement
